You will be able to register your personal information beginning Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 7:00 AM, EST through Friday, March 16, 2018 at 6:00 PM, EDT.

Entry Window

You will be able to add your entries to the system beginning Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 12:00 AM, EST through Friday, March 16, 2018 at 6:00 PM, EDT. Entries will be accepted at our shipping and drop-off locations during this window as well.

Entry Fees

$8.00 (USD) per entry. $7.00 per entry after the 1st entry. $0.00 for unlimited entries.

There is a limit of three hundred (300) entries for this competition.

Bottle Acceptance Rules

Each entry will consist of two (2)  12 to 22 ounce capped bottles or corked bottles that are void of all identifying information, including labels and embossing (other than the entry label affixed with a rubber band). Printed caps are allowed, but must be blacked out completely.

12oz brown glass bottles are preferred; however, green and clear glass will be accepted. Swing top bottles will likewise be accepted as well as corked bottles.

Bottles will not be returned to contest entrants.

Completed entry forms must be submitted with all entries, and can be printed directly from this website. Entry forms should be attached to bottles WITH A RUBBER BAND ONLY; GLUE AND/OR TAPE IS UNACCEPTABLE!!

Please fill out the entry forms completely. Be meticulous about noting any special ingredients that are used, as well as the base beer style. Failure to note such ingredients may impact the judges' scoring of your entry.

Brewers are limited to 3 entries total.

Packing and Shipping

Carefully pack your entries in a sturdy box. Line the inside of your carton with a plastic trash bag. Partition and pack each bottle with adequate packaging material. Please do not over pack!

Write clearly: "Fragile. This Side Up." on the package. Please refrain from using "messy" packaging materials such a Styrofoam "peanuts" or pellets; please use packaging material such as bubble wrap.

Enclose each of your bottle labels in a small zip-top bag before attaching to their respective bottles. This way it makes it possible for the organizer to identify specifically which entry has broken if there is damage during shipment.

Every reasonable effort will be made to contact entrants whose bottles have broken to make arrangements for sending replacement bottles.

If you live in the United States, please note that it is illegal to ship your entries via the United States Postal Service (USPS). Private shipping companies have the right to refuse your shipment if they are informed that the package contains glass and/or alcoholic beverages. Be aware that entries mailed internationally are often required by customs to have proper documentation. These entries might be opened and/or returned to the shipper by customs' officials at their discretion. It is solely the entrant's responsibility to follow all applicable laws and regulations.

Best of Show

The Best in Show Award winner will receive an opportunity to participate in the Portner Brewhouse Craft Beer Test Kitchen® program. As part of this innovative approach to collaborative experience and feedback, the recipient will work directly with the Portner Brewhouse brewmaster to scale their original winning recipe at the Alexandria, VA brewpub. Portner Brewhouse will host a public launch party for the winner who may invite up to 50 friends and family members. The beer will be available for at least one month! The Portner Brewhouse team will collect customer feedback and sales data from its patrons and compile the information into a Recipe Report Card provided to the winner. Brew – Enjoy – Learn

If the Best of Show Winner is unable or unwilling to accept this prize, a substitute will be provided, and the Test Kitchen prize will be awarded to the next prize winner in line willing and able to accept it.

This prize is not available if the winner is a sour/wild yeast beer. In that case, a substitution will be made at the discretion of the competition organizers in consult with Portner Brewhouse.


Results will be posted to the competition web site after judging is finished and all scores are entered into the system.

The awards ceremony will take place at the April DC Homebrewers meeting (tentatively scheduled for 04/23).

Medals and prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each category plus 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the Best Of Show round.

Score sheets will be emailed to entrants a few days after the event. Due to email limitations, it will take several days, and your friends may get their scoresheets a day or two before you do. We ask for your patience. If you haven't gotten your scoresheets by March 31, then please contact us - NOT BEFORE THEN. Thanks...

Medals and prizes will be awarded at the April DC Homebrewers Club meeting. Non-members are invited to attend to claim their medals and prizes. Those who cannot attend the meeting will be contacted to determine if they can be picked at a local homebrew shop. If this is not possible, medals and prizes will be mailed.
